Don’t just do a product review. It needs to be about an organization. Choose an organization that you like. Perhaps choose something in an industry you might want to work in once you graduate.
· Has the government restricted the organization/industry or have they attempted to place any sort of regulations on the given organization or industry? If so, what were the secondary effects of the regulation?
· What all groups/parties are impacted by such a regulation? Was a special interest group involved in lobbying the government for the given regulation to be put in place (for example, perhaps lobbying for a tariff or quota to be implemented, or lobbying for occupational licensing requirements in their industry)?
· What were the economic ramifications of the policy? What happened, if anything, to: supply, demand, price, quantity supplied, and quantity demanded?
· Did a shortage, surplus, externalities, or anything else interesting result from the policy?
· How does this impact the formal organization you’re researching in the short term? Long term? How does it impact their competitors in the industry?
· Who are the “winners” and who are the “losers” of the regulatory policy?
A few notes: Please do not select a sports team as your formal organization. There are millions of business firms, non-profits, etc. to select from so there shouldn’t be a shortage of potential topics. Also note that the majority of this prompt has to do with how government regulations impact the formal organization you chose, so it would not be a wise decision to ignore this part of the prompt.
Remember: Formal organizations are people organized into a social unit for the explicit purpose of achieving certain goals. Such organizations include governments, businesses, nonprofit organizations, political parties, and the court systems. They do not include informal organizations such as the family, culture, and social groups. Formal organizations are characterized by endurance beyond the participation of individuals and require detailed rules for internal operations.
